Chapter 2
Using RMON Services
You can use RMON (remote monitoring) services to monitor and analyze network
traffic flow within remote LAN segments. Refer to this chapter for
• An overview of RMON services (see page 2-1)
• An overview of the RMON architecture (see page 2-3)
• RMON statistics groups (see pa
ge 2-4)
• RMON interoperability issues (see pa
ge 2-7)
• Instructions on enabling a DCM for RMON data collection (see pa

RMON Overview
RMON is a standard MIB that defines a set of MAC-layer statistics and control
objects that network managers can use to analyze network traffic flow within
remote LAN segments. The RMON MIB uses SNMP to monitor the basic
operations of Ethernet.
A typical RMON configuration consists of a central network management station
and a remote monitoring device, called an RMON agent. The network
management station can be a Windows-based or UNIX-based workstation or PC
running network management software, such as the Bay Networks Optivity
®
network management system. The network manager at the management station,
using Optivity Analysis software, issues SNMP commands requesting
information from the RMON agent. The RMON agent sends the requested
information to the management station, which then processes and displays this
information on its console.
