digital A telephone interface that supports information represented by binary
code. The original signal is translated into a numeric representation.
In the United States, a digital interface is known as T1; in Europe, it is
known as E1 or CEPT.
The fundamental difference between T1 and E1 standards are the bit
rate and voice data compression schemes (T1 uses u-law, while E1
uses A-law). Many countries have developed their own unique digital
telephone protocols within T1 or E1 standards. Occasionally, a single
country (such as the U.S.) uses multiple implementations of the T1
specification.
On the Avaya MPS, the physical connection for the digital phone line
interface is made by the channel service unit (CSU). Each digital
interface supports either 24 or 48 individual T1 telephone lines, or 30
or 60 E1 telephone lines.
The Avaya MPS supports several digital protocols:
•wink start
channel bank
•ISDN
common channel signaling
